Hypocrisy appears to be a characteristic that many politicians, the world over, have enthusiastically adopted, whether due to the knowledge that such a lack of integrity would not harm them politically or by sheer ignorance or greed.
For the purposes of this piece, however, let’s narrow our focus to The US Republican Party’s Senator from South Carolina who, in his apparent unbridled capacities of hypocrisy and obliviousness, announced the attempted introduction of legislation that would ban abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy nationwide.
Furthermore, the legislation is even more extreme than previous restrictions attempted to be introduced by Graham, as this bill set the limit at 15 weeks, as opposed to 20 weeks, along with failing to allow exceptions in the case of the mother’s health and life, in addition to cases involving incest or rape.
Hypocrisy and obliviousness.
Starting with the latter, the Senator, whose role entails the representation of his peoples’ best interests, has introduced legislation that is unwanted. As demonstrated by an Ipsos/Reuters poll, undertaken between September 7th and 12th 2022, evidence that 63% of respondents voiced their lack of support for candidates who augmented laws that severely curtail or ban abortion.
Moreover, in the light of the Supreme Court’s decision, New York saw Democrat Pat Ryan emerge victorious, in a special House election, subsequent to him making his top campaign issue abortion. In addition, in the Conservative state of Kansas, voters overwhelmingly voted to reject an attempt to remove, from the state’s constitution, abortion protections.

Now pivoting to the former characteristic, after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the US Supreme Court in June of this year, Graham, amongst other Republicans, voiced their position that abortion policy is a decision that should remain in the hands of individual states.

Alas, it appears the Senator’s memory may require attention, as the legislation he introduced stands in direct opposition to such a stance.
On the other hand, purportedly, Graham voiced that the introduction of such measures was in response to the Democratic Party’s prior failed attempt at codifying national abortion rights, stating:
“After they introduced a bill to define who they are, I thought it’d be nice to introduce a bill to define who we are… If we take back the House and the Senate, I can assure you we’ll have a vote on our bill”.
A party defined by cruelty, ignorance, and insincerity, apparently.
Not only does such an action taken by Graham contradict public opinion, reason and basic morality, it also stands in contrast to other members of his political party.
Take for example Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell who; when questioned if he would table Graham’s legislation for a vote on the floor, if the Republicans won a Senate majority in November’s midterm elections, said;
“I think most of the members of my conference prefer that this be dealt with at the state level”.
Although, McConnell’s statement should be taken with a pinch of salt, given his personal track record of hypocrisy.
Senator Graham, as demonstrated, is a public figure who acts not in the public interest, health and safety, and is seemingly unbothered by maintaining any form of personal integrity.
The public has spoken, whether privately or electorally, against abortion restriction or curtailment measures.
Let us hope other members of Congress, who actually champion the issues of their constituents, can combat extremist and draconian measures introduced by those who do not.
