On July 9th at around 2:30 A.M., a pickup truck that was allegedly driving in a reckless manner swerved from the driving lane on North Pecos Road and onto the sidewalk. As the driver lost control of the vehicle, it struck both a bicyclist and a light pole before finally crashing to a stop into a wall.
The impact of the collision was very devastating to the bicyclist, who succumbed to their injuries and passed away at the scene.
According to North Las Vegas Police Officer Alex Cuevas, an initial investigation into the accident revealed that the driver was traveling recklessly. What’s more, the driver did not appear to stop to check on the bicyclist. It remains unclear whether the suspect realized that they had struck a pedestrian or not. Regardless, the suspect fled the scene. Police will continue to investigate further into the accident.
The driver, who is 25 years old, is now facing multiple charges. The suspect turned himself in to police custody the day following the fatal crash. Despite turning himself in later, he’s still expected to face charges including failing to stop at the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license.
Criminal Charges Versus Financial Recourse
While the suspect is currently facing multiple criminal charges, that won’t help the grieving family members of the lost bicyclist. Unfortunately, when these types of tragedies occur, it’s often on the surviving family members to afford a funeral and burial. What’s more, the family will likely also be struggling with an enormous amount of grief and the loss of financial support from the deceased.
While criminal courts do not provide any type of recourse for surviving family members, civil courts in Las Vegas can.
If survivors seek out a wrongful death claim, then they can potentially recover from the financial losses they’ve endured as a result of their loved one’s passing. If successful, then the courts will order the responsible person to pay you for all of your losses in the form of financial compensation.
If you’re considering seeking out a wrongful death claim, then it’s in your best interests to consult with an attorney first. A good lawyer will help you understand more about your legal options and how much your overall claim could be worth. What’s more, a quality lawyer will understand the gravity of your situation and take all of the undue stress off of you by tending to the legal matters surrounding your loved one’s passing.
