Early on April 7th, two vehicles smashed into each other on Interstate 11 in Las Vegas. According to recent reports, both one man and one woman were fatally injured as a result of the collision.
Nevada State Police confirmed that the crash happened at around 6:43 A.M. near mile marker 12. The two cars were traveling in opposite directions at the time of the head-on crash. The two adults were both declared deceased at the scene.
Due to the severity of the crash, both travel lanes in I-11 were closed down for several hours as the roadway was cleared and investigations were conducted. The roadways were finally opened around 12:15 P.M. Since investigations are ongoing, it remains unclear whether impairment had anything to do with the crash.
Typically, head-on collisions are some of the most dangerous types of car accidents to experience because of the location of the impact and the head-on nature of the crash. These collisions cause the front end of the car, typically the driver’s side, to take on the brunt of the force of the impact. Air bags will deploy, and occupants are thrown forward. Passengers may smash into the car’s interior or an airbag. Both cars are likely to start rotating and spinning rapidly, which will further thrust passengers around the damaged car.
On average, four people are killed for every three fatal head-on collisions that occur, and many of these fatalities occur on rural highways where the legal speed limits are higher.
