In a heart-stopping incident that has since captured the attention of many on social media, a Brevard County, Florida, sheriff’s deputy showed remarkable bravery and quick thinking when she saved her K-9 partner from a perilous fall.
The event unfolded on the 528 Causeway, a bridge that stands above the waters of the Indian River, located east of Orlando.
Deputy Lauren Donaldson and K-9 Zeppelin, a Belgian Malinois, were returning to their vehicle after responding to a critical incident and making a felony arrest when the unexpected occurred.
Without any warning, Zeppelin, possibly spurred by an unknown stimulus, leaped over the bridge’s guardrail.
With incredible speed and presence of mind, Donaldson reacted immediately to secure Zeppelin’s leash and braced herself against the railing, managing to pull the canine back to safety.
The dramatic rescue was captured in a video, which was shared by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey highlighted the gravity of the situation.
“Without Lauren’s fast action, there is no question that Zeppelin would have fallen approximately 75 feet into the Indian River and most likely to his death,” Ivey said on Facebook.
Donaldson, who is notably light in stature, used all her strength to rescue the canine.
“Lauren’s rescue of her beloved partner is even more amazing when you consider that Zeppelin weighs approximately 75 pounds and Lauren weighs 122 pounds when she is soaking wet and holding a bowling ball,” Ivey noted.
Following the rescue, Zeppelin appeared unharmed, trotting away and wagging his tail.
Donaldson and Zeppelin are well-regarded in the law enforcement community, being two-time reigning champions in the “Hardest Hitting K-9” category of the Space Coast K-9 Competition. The event is known for showcasing the agility, strength and skill of the region’s police dogs.
Ivey expressed his pride in Donaldson’s actions. “I could not be more proud of Lauren for the save, as well as for her work in the community,” he said.
