(KRON) — Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park went into lockdown on Monday after a student was threatened over text, the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District said.
The school district learned of the threat at 9:45 a.m., targeting a specific student. CRPUSD said it was part of an ongoing dispute stemming from an off-campus fight between students who attend schools across Sonoma County.
The threat was sent via text message, referencing a weapon and the victim’s location at RCHS. The student who made the threat is a girl who lives in Santa Rosa, according to the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety. She was arrested later that morning.
The school was locked down as authorities searched for the student who made the threat. Eventually, the school district identified the person who made the threat and determined she was not in Rohnert Park, per CRPUSD.
The lockdown was switched to a shelter-in-place at 10:17 a.m. At 11:50 a.m., the alleged threat-maker was arrested and the shelter-in-place was lifted. School activities resumed at 12:35 p.m.
The threat “initially happened” in Cotati. Multiple police agencies worked together to ensure the safety of students.
Students experiencing anxiety or stress related to this incident are encouraged to speak to a mental health counselor, who are on campus at RCHS.
