A 68-year-old resident of Las Vegas has been arrested and charged with a special circumstances murder in what’s now being deemed a hate crime shooting. According to initial reports, the suspect reportedly entered the Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods. He was armed with multiple 9mm handguns, extra magazines, and even a few Molotov-type cocktails.
The suspect allegedly attempted to secure the banquet hall doors closed before hiding a few backpacks with explosives around the area. Once among the crowd, he started to shoot off his weapon.
One individual was fatally injured, while five others were significantly wounded. Thankfully, the suspect’s weapon jammed and several individuals jumped the shooter. They detained the culprit until police arrived.
As if the crime itself wasn’t devastating enough, now authorities have uncovered that the shooting was likely a hate crime. The suspect is directly tied to the Chinese Communist Party’s United Front Work Department. According to reports, the victim was Taiwanese, and the entire gathering was at a Taiwanese American church luncheon.
Sadly, China-Taiwan relations have been extremely tense for many reasons. At the heart of the issue, though, is that Beijing considered Taiwan its own territory but it has been independently governed for decades. China is always looking for opportunities to reclaim control.
Criminal Charges Are Not Your Only Legal Recourse
The political tension between China and Taiwan likely has little bearing to the families who have lost a loved one in this tragedy. Criminal charges will be levied against the suspect, but that’s not enough for the victim’s surviving relatives.
The good news is that criminal charges aren’t your only recourse in these types of situations. Surviving families or injured victims can seek out financial compensation from the culprit in civil court through either a wrongful death lawsuit or a personal injury lawsuit.
In the situation outlined above, all the injured victims and the surviving family members of the fatally wounded individual would likely be eligible to receive compensation in the form of medical bills, future medical costs, burial costs, lost wages, loss of spousal support, and more.
