At this point, most folks view AI as an assistive technology – at least, before it goes rogue.
But the question of how it assists humans (lawyers, in this case) is a broader subject.
That’s why we brought Dave Maxfield, an attorney and efficiency expert, on the Non-Eventcast podcast — to talk about how AI helps us to think, along with how dangerous it might be in terms of potentially replacing human intelligence.
I talk with Dave about how we were both English majors who went to law school (2:02), before covering how Dave wrote the Lean Law Firm book with Larry Port – something a good English major would do (6:10, 27:56).
Then, we make the big jump into AI, by talking about the limitations of those sorts of tools (10:51) before addressing the specific products Dave uses in his practice (14:18).
Dave then talks about how AI can be used to offload information and processes that you don’t need to keep in mind anymore, in order to optimize your capacity for making important business management decisions – you know, free your mind (20:02).
After that, we identify how Dave uses AI to assist with litigation tasks (25:02). Finally, Dave and I get to some real talk about whether AI can actually replace jobs, when and how (22:10).
If you’re looking for a deep dive on AI technology, and its implications for the future (and present) of the practice of law – we’ve got the podcast episode for you.
