Biglaw firms across the country used the first month of the new year to solidify their business strategies for 2024, and at some firms, that included hiring essential personnel to handle operations.
Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott — a firm that brought in $139,650,000 gross revenue in 2022, putting it at No. 187 in the most recent Am Law 200 — recently hired a chief operations officer after going for 10 years without one. Eddie Raychaudhuri, who formerly served as practice group director at DLA Piper and pricing manager at several other Biglaw firms, has taken the job, and plans to hit the ground running.
“Being a holistic manager is appealing to me,” Raychaudhuri told the Legal Intelligencer. “I could tell [when I was interviewing with Eckert] there was a real appetite for understanding how larger international law firms practice and manage their firms. I’m looking forward to bringing that kind of sophistication [to Eckert],” he concluded.

[CEO Scott] Cessar added that as he assumed the role of the firm’s CEO, he and the firm’s management team realized the 300-lawyer firm could benefit from adopting Big Law strategy as it continues to compete in a consolidating market.
“We wanted to see what we can learn from [larger firms] to improve our management structure, our financial performance,” Cessar explained. “Just going through the process of interviewing, we learned a lot of things.”
In particular, Cessar and the firm are looking at Raychaudhuri to help increase profitability, analyze collections, and evaluate client intake processes, for a start.
