Responding to a call that has since gained traction on social media, Sumter police officers in South Carolina rescued an adventurous hound named Spike after he somehow got stuck in his owner’s dryer vent.
The Sumter Police Department shared the humorous November 30 incident on Facebook, explaining that Spike was “sniffing out mischief” when he managed to wedge himself into the dryer vent.
The call for help came in around 2 p.m. from a woman who was pet-sitting Spike, revealing that the dog belonged to her grandson.
Upon arrival at the scene, police and Sumter Fire Department officials discovered Spike’s bashful face protruding from the home, with his head outside the dryer vent and the rest of his body indoors.
The challenge was to free the trapped dog without causing harm.
Quick-thinking authorities widened the dryer vent opening, allowing them to carefully extract Spike from his uncomfortable predicament.
Drusilla Harvin, the owner’s grandmother, expressed her gratitude on Facebook.
“I am thankful for the time and the care from both the police and fire department for rescuing Spike, it took a little over an hour. I’m glad I was home while Kam was at school. Job well done,” Harvin said.
Despite the tight quarters and the need for some home repairs, Spike emerged unscathed from his misadventure.
“The happy hound was freed from his unfortunate circumstance,” the police stated, assuring the public that Spike is doing well post-rescue.
In a lighthearted response to the incident, Sumter Police Lieutenant C. Shepperd Lewis noted that Spike tends to “get into things,” hinting at the pup’s mischievous nature.
The police department also shared the owner’s grandmother’s sense of humor about the situation, who commented in an update that Spike was still misbehaving.
“Thank you all for the wonderful comments, he did brought on a lot of laughs and positive comments. Well, today he dug a hole under the gate and toured the neighbor,” Harvin added.
“Hounds gonna hound,” one commenter joked.
