NEW YORK — A suspect’s weapon fired as officers with the New York Police Department wrestled to get the gun away from the man, WABC reports.
Officers were responding to a 911 call on Oct. 27 regarding a man with a gun while sitting in a car near an intersection.
As officers approached the car, they told the man to drop the gun.
Body camera video released on Nov. 20 shows the man refusing several commands. One officer then tried to grab the weapon when a struggle over the weapon started.
Video shows several officers trying to remove the gun from the suspect’s hand when a shot was fired.
After the struggle, officers were able to secure the weapon and arrest the suspect.
“That person who was disarmed, he actually shot a female at an earlier point and that just goes on to the bravery of the men and women of this department,” Deputy Mayor of New York City for Public Safety Phil Banks told WABC.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams gave the officers involved special honors for their actions.
