Donald Trump took time out from attending his civil fraud trial in New York on Tuesday to whip against House Republicans’ latest Speaker nominee, Majority Whip Tom Emmer, calling the Minnesota Republican a “globalist RINO” and suggesting he only supported the ex-president “to win.”
Just one day earlier Trump on-camera announced he was trying to stay out of the Speaker’s race, but said he’s always gotten along with Emmer.
Emmer is seen as less extreme than his immediate predecessor vying for the Speakership, Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, because he voted to certify the 2020 election. But Emmer signed on to a amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to invalidate the results of the election in four swing states, which would have stolen the election from President Joe Biden.
“I have many wonderful friends wanting to be Speaker of the House, and some are truly great Warriors,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Tuesday afternoon.

“RINO Tom Emmer, who I do not know well, is not one of them,” the ex-president declared, which could effectively sink the nomination barely hours after Republicans coalesced around one of the nine candidates who entered the latest race.
“He never respected the Power of a Trump Endorsement, or the breadth and scope of MAGA—MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! He fought me all the way, and actually spent more time defending Ilhan Omar, than he did me—He is totally out-of-touch with Republican Voters.”
“I believe he has now learned his lesson, because he is saying that he is Pro-Trump all the way, but who can ever be sure?” Trump posited. “Has he only changed because that’s what it takes to win? The Republican Party cannot take that chance, because that’s not where the America First Voters are. Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!”
U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), responsible for leading the team of House Republicans who ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy 21 days ago with no plan to replace him, was “quietly helping” Emmer win the nomination prior to Trump’s attack, according to Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman.
After reportedly voting for Emmer, and then seeing Trump’s attack, Gaetz turned on him and now opposes him for Speaker. The Florida Republican with deep ties to Trump now “says he believes it’s really important to listen to ‘the leader of our party,’” reports Punchbowl’s Mica Soellner.
Sherman now reports Emmer’s “speaker bid is in big trouble.”

Out of the box there are at least two dozen Republicans who are refusing to vote for Emmer, the fourth nominee Republicans have chosen this year. Multiple reports suggest it is unlikely Emmer will get to 217, the number of Republicans needed to elect him Speaker without help from Democrats.

Reporter: Will you endorse Emmer? He hasn’t always been your biggest fan…
Trump: He’s my biggest fan now because he called me yesterday and told me he’s my biggest fan so… I’m trying to stay out of that as much as possible pic.twitter.com/F8zwX8fVSk
