The community of Las Vegas is in shock after hearing the disturbing and tragic details about a recent hit-and-run involving two teenagers. While accidents involving minor drivers typically aren’t covered extensively in the media, this case is different as both young men will be tried in adult criminal court.
According to police accounts, the crash incident occurred on the morning of August 14th. Police say that two teenagers, aged 17 and 16, started out their criminal streak by stealing a Hyundai Sedan. Once inside, the duo appear to have agreed to cause chaos while capturing everything on video.
First, the teenagers intentionally targeted a bicyclist and struck him with their car. The biker was 72-years-old. They fled away and then crashed into a Toyota Corolla. After fleeing that scene, they came across another bicyclist.
Video evidence obtained by the police shows the teenagers in the stolen vehicle approaching the biker from behind. The bicyclist is riding on the curb, and there is no other traffic on the road. The driver then intentionally slams into the bicyclist, 64-year-old Andreas “Andy” Probst. Probst was thrust backward and into the hood of the car. He slams into the windshield. The driver maneuvers the vehicle, and the victim can be seen lying on the ground next to the curb as the teenagers drive away.
A high school resource officer became aware of the video footage and provided it to the police two weeks after the original incident. Once investigators determined who was behind the camera and the wheel, both teens were arrested.
The 17 year old turned 18 in custody. Both teens are facing murder, attempted murder, and other charges. Both are being held in custody without bail.
Wrongful Death Personal Injury Claims in Las Vegas
The widow of the deceased, Crystal Probst, and the duo’s daughter, Taylor Probst, were both present in court during the teen’s initial hearing. Afterward, they both left without speaking to reporters.
When you’ve suddenly lost your loved one as a result of someone else’s behavior, coping with the grief is very complicated. It’s natural to want the other person to face accountability and be held responsible for their actions. Seeking out criminal charges against the perpetrators is often appropriate, but it doesn’t help secure justice for the other losses experienced by the surviving loved ones of a victim.
For instance, a surviving spouse and daughter may suddenly have to cope with a loss of financial stability as a result of this wrongful death. On top of that, the family will need to cover burial expenses and other costs.
In many wrongful death situations, it’s possible to seek out financial justice in the form of a personal injury lawsuit against the person responsible for the accident. To determine if your current situation has the necessary elements to seek out a claim, it might be in your best interests to speak with a lawyer.
