Tesla Recalls Thousands of Vehicles with Autopilot Systems
On February 15, 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a Safety Recall Report impacting roughly 362,758 Tesla vehicles. The notice states that the estimated percentage of the vehicles with the “defect” was 100 percent. The recall impacted several Tesla models with the Autosteer on City Streets (FSB Beta or Full Self-Driving Beta) feature.
A description of the defect included in the notice explained that in rare circumstances and within operating limitations, the feature could result in several maneuvers before the driver could intervene. In these situations, the risk of a collision could increase.
On January 25, 2023, the NHTSA advised Tesla of the concerns and requested the company address the concerns by filing a recall notice. On February 7, 2023, Tesla agreed to issue a voluntary recall, even though it did not concur with the NHTSA’s analysis.
