HAMILTON COUNTY, Ill. — Illinois State Police released video of a sheriff’s deputy shooting a suspect at a sheriff’s office in Southern Illinois.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office asked Illinois State Police to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred after midnight on Oct. 20 at sheriff’s office in McLeansboro.
Aaron J. Sealy, 30, of Herrin, had been arrested on charges of possessing a stolen vehicle, controlled substances and meth and was transported to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
While seated in a chair at the sheriff’s office, the video shows, Sealy loosened the handcuffs, grabbed a fire extinguisher and discharged it toward a Mcleansboro officer and a Hamilton County Deputy.
Both officers ordered Sealy to drop the fire extinguisher before discharging their firearms, striking him once, according to state police. Officers provided aid to Sealy until he was transported to a hospital in Carbondale, per the release.
Previous reports on the incident by WSIL-TV said Sealy was in critical but stable condition after the shooting. State Police said Monday he’s back in the custody of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department.
